Tasha Tries: 1347 Committee Cocktails
1347 Committee Cocktails :
A cautionary tale regarding the dangers of
being too near the guacamole and corn chips at speech time.
The 1347 Committee’s
freshers’ cocktails was slightly misleading given the closest one could come to
a cocktail would be the maverick move of mixing the apple juice and white wine
on offer together. Nevertheless, the cocktail misnomer was negated by the
guacamole and corn chips on offer. It was near the guacamole and corn chips on
the left hand corner of the refreshment table that I found myself hovering
around during the part of the evening devoted to speeches– this was to prove
fatal. I heard the siren song of the creamy avocado dip and misjudged the
auditory power imbued in crunching on corn chips amidst an almost silent room.
The hope that the crunch was only amplified in my head was a short lived one,
dashed by the suppressed laughter of friends and acquaintances at my social
faux-pas, betraying my Australian uncouthness exacerbated by a penchant for
guacamole.

Tasha Tries: Pie Society & GP Ceilidh
Pie Society in P staircase:
Without any exaggeration Friday’s inaugural Friday Pie-Soc might be the high-point of my Lent term. The P staircase, spearheaded by pie-chef extraordinaire Isaac, invited the rest of college into their gyp room, out of which were coming delicious and piping hot cherry-almond and banana-custard pies. Banana being my favourite dessert ingredient, my choice of pie was obvious, and served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, I think I attained nirvana. My only regret is that in sheer exhilaration (or worry the ice cream would melt), I probably ate my pie too quickly could have savoured the flavour more – but luckily there is always next Friday pie-day.
I went to soak up the Gaelic culture and learn a few moves to try out at Cindies, but the brilliant surprise was the spread that went with it – brownies, apple pies, chocolate cake, guacamole and tortilla chips. Not to mention the beverages (of which the coca cola was surprisingly effective relief for my tonsillitis).
Look out for Tasha's take on this week's pies!!
Tasha Tries: Trough (Week 1&2)
The good:
Sweet potato side is back (with pears!) Initially hesitant to change a classic but the add-in of sweet, succulent pear is a good one. More mains (often stir fries and the like) are being served with accompanying rice/cous-cous/etc…
The average:
Spring Rolls: a valiant attempt at fusion but the Indian/spiced mixture inside the spring rolls seemed more what one would expect of a samosa. Shakshuka (spelt chakchouka on the board, but I suppose when the word is Hebrew/Arabic there’s room for creative spelling choices): I initially got served two spoonfuls of the capsicum/tomato mixture without any egg (the main ingredient of the dish). Perhaps this is a dish best left to over-priced brunch cafés to serve in the mini-pan it was cooked in with (perhaps) more than one egg.
The ‘I don’t know how to feel about this’:
Trough’s new fancier way of arranging cutlery, fruit, napkins, etc…
